Study Abroad Trend on the Rise

College-bound individuals are setting their sights farther than ever While parents cling to their young ones, these budding, college-bound individuals are setting their sights farther than ever for educational prospects according to the latest report from Annual Open Doors. There has been a 10% increase to the number of foreign students who have chosen to study in America, and Americans are fleeing the nest 5% more often than in previous years. These percentages may not seem like they would have a major impact, but when translated into numbers, the reality changes. There are currently close to one million foreign students studying on American soil and well over a quarter of a million US citizens studying abroad. Growing International Presence The increase in international students isn’t from a single source, though India has seen an especially dramatic rise in numbers of students studying in the US (a 30% increase), making it the second largest source country for international students in the US (with 102,673 students studying abroad in 2013-2014). China still holds the top spot, with 274,439 students studying abroad that same year, though Chinas percentage increase was considerably lower than Indias, at only 11%. Also interesting to note is that as more Indians head to the US for school, fewer are studying abroad in the UK. Brazil is also making tremendous strides towards sending students to America for college, experiencing a 78% increase over the last three years. Both Brazil and Saudi Arabia (up by 11.2%) encourage studying abroad by offering students scholarships, though Brazil may be looking at a cessation of these funds with the current instability of their economy. International Presence Across the States International students are scattered across American campuses, with the following universities having the greatest bulk of the foreign student enrollment (from greatest to least): New York University, the University of Southern California, Columbia University,  Arizona State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northeastern University, Purdue University and the University of California at Los Angeles. What is even more interesting to note is the level of education at which these individuals are training: †¢Ã‚  Nearly half of international students are undergraduates (40.9%). †¢Ã‚  37.2% are at graduate level. †¢Ã‚  12.3% are currently doing optional practical training, a post-grad on the job training program. American Students Studying Abroad As the influx of international students increases within US borders, Americans are also expanding their horizons by opting to study overseas. The 5.2% increase is the largest one we’ve seen in the past five years, denoting a possible shift towards this more expansive experience. Students are remaining loyal to specific locations, however, not deviating much from previous years, with the top five locations including the UK, Italy, Spain, France and China. * The full chart can be viewed here. The length of time for annual study abroad also continues to remain steady, averaging an eight-week or less duration for 62.1% of students. Study Abroad Students Demographics In terms of who is traveling farther for their studies, the female demographic continued to dominate over males, 65% over 34%. However, racial distinctions are beginning to shift, showing an increase of 2% in non-white students going abroad. Subjects that continue to be a focus for students studying abroad include: †¢ 22.6% science, technology, engineering and mathematics †¢ 19.6% business †¢ 18.7% social sciences †¢ 7.8% foreign language and international studies †¢ 7% fine or applied arts The increase in both inbound and outbound students continues to grow steadily through encouragement on a government level. Male Dominance Revealed Through Symbolism in The Chrysanthemums In Steinbeck’s â€Å"The Chrysanthemum† a story is told of a woman who loves to garden and tend to her beautiful chrysanthemums, a husband who tends to the matters of business on the ranch, and the strange encounter with a tinkerer. Each of these aspects create the story, but there is more depth than what meets the eye. Through Steinbeck’s short story one can recognize many symbols that represent the different gender roles of men and women and the male dominance perceived during the time the story was written. Some of the symbols Steinbeck places in his story to represent this are the setting of Salina Valley, chrysanthemums, Henry’s apple orchard, a wire fence, and scissors.†¦show more content†¦The male dominance on the farm is immediately brought to the reader’s attention as her husband, decent but dull, excludes her from the important business of the ranch (Renner). In re lation, Elisa is isolated from the rest of the world in Salina Valley. Elisa’s flower garden is also shown as isolated as it is placed within the confines of a wire fence that â€Å"protect her flower garden from cattle and dogs and chicken† (Steinbeck, 207). It is from this fenced-in garden Elisa witnesses her husband and a ranch worker â€Å"ride up the pale yellow hillside in search of the steers.† (Steinbeck, 208). There is a tone in the writing that suggest Elisa is ready to escape the confines of her fenced-in garden and join the men on the hill doing something different than working in the flower garden. This illustrates the literal boundaries Elisa has, and boundaries society bounds women by. The fence around the farm also indicates boundaries society set for women and some of the same boundaries Elisa feels especially as she interacts with the tinkerer. Analysis: Juliet Essay In the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare reveals a complex character, Juliet, who has a multifaceted personality. Even so, the essence of Juliets identify is her youth. Her inexperience gives her a lovable freshness. This is first demonstrated in the famous balcony scene when she is talking to herself. Her question, Whats in a name? suggests a very childlike quality. Its her way of paraphrasing the question, Why? Children often ask this question without even thinking about it. As the scene progresses, she proposes to Romeo. She is so artless and untraditional in this regard. Nowadays, society has given women more freedom and independence. Back then, a woman proposing marriage was unheard of. Through this encounter between Romeo and Juliet, we see Juliets innocence in the way she responds to her first true love. Their poetic words are simple yet sincere, sweet words spoken in total honesty from the depths of their souls. New to love, Juliet found it difficult to express her feelings to Romeo. Had he no overheard her private thoughts in Capulets orchard, Juliet most likely would not have been able to say those things to his face. Later in the play, Romeo says, Now I have stained the childhood of our joy. He recognized the purity of their love. Perhaps this is why Juliet devotes herself so entirely to him without any doubts. She has childlike faith in him. In that way, her love for him was blind. Ever the optimist, she still believes Friar Lawrences plan will work despite all the possible catastrophes that could occur. For her, love will always triumph over hate. Theres no reason for her to believe otherwise. Her youthful nature is shown again through her impatience. Waiting for the nurse to come back, Juliet is anxious and frustrated. The second the nurse returns, she demands to hear of the news. This shows somewhat of a character flaw as she is only interested in instant gratification. Her inability to wait for long term satisfaction sets the stage for more diaster for the star-crossed lovers. The nurse comments on this when she says Juliet is hot, meaning impatient. Juliet has a tendency to rush things; this trait goes hand in hand with her impatience. Romeo and Juliet are already married when their relationship is only a few days old. Eventually, this fault in the couple leads to their untimely demise. Hastiness is an important part of the play. Juliets line, It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, serves to confirm this. Although she realized this fact, she did nothing to slow down the pace of the relationship. Rebelling against her parents to wed their enemys son, Juliet was merely following her heart. By that time, she had fallen too much in love with Romeo to give himup. Despite not wanting to disobey her parents, she listened to her instincts and emotions. In her case, it was an unwise decision because her emotions clouded her judgment. Juliets attributes contrast sharply with those  of the nurse, who acts as a foil. Even though the two are extremely close, they are remarkably distinct. For example, Juliet is still dreaming of love whereas the nurse is more enlightened. Juliet is very naive about men, whereas the nurse has no faith, no honesty in men. The young teen has not perceived anything in her short life to stain the male image in her eyes because of her sheltered existence.
